Aramid
Aramid refers to the group of aromatic polyamides. Our Kevlar® and Technora® fabrics also belong to this group. The fibres made from this polymer are particularly interesting from a technical point of view. They are characterised by a high melting point and extremely high tensile strength. Furthermore, they are usually very abrasion-resistant. Unfortunately, in their raw state, the fibres have very low UV resistance and high water absorption (up to 7%). However, UV stability can be improved with coatings.
The woven fabrics are particularly impressive due to their excellent heat and cut protection properties and high abrasion resistance. They are often used in areas subject to high stress. In addition to motorcycle clothing, heat-resistant clothing and occupational safety, they are also used for yarns, ropes and sails.
Another major area of application for aramids is fibre-reinforced plastics, often in combination with carbon fibres. These are used, e.g., in vehicle and boat construction.
When processing our fabrics, it should be noted that they are very difficult to cut with standard tailor's scissors. The use of scissors with micro-serrations is recommended (see here).
