ULTRA TEN X, backpack-laminate with UHMWPE, 99/sqm
With ULTRA TEN X, Challenge Sailcloth has further refined its ultralight line of backpack laminates. Similar to ULTRA 80 X, the cross-ply fibers arranged in three directions ensure excellent dimensional stability. To ensure greater durability when used as backpack material, ULTRA TEN X features a slightly thicker 0.75 mil film. Nevertheless, the total weight remains below the 100 g/sqm mark.
The construction is the same as that of the other ULTRA X laminates: The outer layer consists of a fabric made of 100% high-strength UHMWPE fibers. UHMWPE fibers are currently considered the gold standard in terms of tear resistance and abrasion resistance. Beneath the outer fabric, strong UHMWPE cross-ply fibers are arranged in a diamond pattern. These increase tear resistance and prevent the material from stretching in all directions. A waterproof, transparent polyester film is laminated to the inner side. Thanks to the outer fabric made of 100% UHMWPE fibers, even this very lightweight version achieves technical performance levels in terms of abrasion resistance and tear strength that rival those of significantly heavier Cordura® fabrics. The result is the perfect fabric for ultralight Backpacks and bags.
In developing the ULTRA laminates, Challenge Sailcloth has implemented the following production features:
- The PES film used is made from 100% recycled polyester derived from post-consumer PET bottles
- No VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are used in the production of ULTRA; all adhesives are solvent-free
- Thanks to an optimized production process, energy-intensive drying processes during lamination are reduced
