For this chalk bag, we used soft Tyvek® softstructure on the outside and relatively stiff X-Pack® VX21 backpack laminate from Dimension Polyant. The black X-Pack® provides stability to the lower part of the chalk bag and protects against abrasion. Thanks to the soft Tyvek® fabric structure, it’s nice and flexible at the top and stays lightweight. On the inside, bright red Highloft fleece provides a super-comfortable feel and absorbs the chalk. The upper edge consists of an elastic fabric with white Dyneema® fibers. While this is actually overkill for the intended use—it simply looks great and pairs perfectly with the other materials. The drawstring allows the inner layer of fleece and Dyneema® ripstop to be closed, ensuring the chalk stays inside the bag during transport.
The properties of Tyvek® softstructure fall somewhere between soft paper and fabric. It has the texture and feel of paper, but is significantly softer. It can be written on, painted on, and printed on, but is tear-resistant and sews well. However, it is not quite as abrasion-resistant as a comparable fabric—but its texture and appearance are unique.
X-Pack® is a backpack laminate that is unmistakable thanks to its diagonal X-Ply fibers. These strong polyester X-Ply fibers are laminated between the outer fabric and a film or lining on the inside. The result is relatively stiff, waterproof, abrasion-resistant, and extremely low-stretch. It is typically used for backpacks or bikepacking bags, but also looks great in many other applications thanks to its attractive appearance.
