Polyamide
Group of fully synthetic fibres. There are various types of polyamide with different properties. The best known are polyamide 6 (Perlon) and polyamide 6.6 (nylon).
Properties: Very tear- and abrasion-resistant, elastic (therefore crease-resistant) and durable, moisture absorption around 4%, wet fibre strength: 80-90%, not very UV-resistant
Uses: Clothing, backpacks, sleeping bags, tents (PUcoated for the floor or silicone-coated for the flysheet), parachutes
Manufacture: by polymerisation (PA 6) or polycondensation (PA 6.6)
