Polyester

The most important group of synthetic fibres in terms of quantity (Terylene, Kodel).

Properties: lightweight, very low moisture absorption (less than 1%, therefore quick-drying), almost as abrasion- and tear-resistant as polyamide, elastic (therefore crease-resistant), very UV-resistant, does not stretch when wet, 40% better thermal conductivity than cotton. Wet fibre strength: 95-100%.

Uses: including fleece, underwear, sleeping bag filling (for example as hollow fibre hollow fibre), tents, backpacks, sewing thread (100% or as a cover yarn). Often used in blends with cotton.

Production: Obtained by polycondensation and melt spinning, often textured or as hollow fibres for thermal insulation.
