In this category, we have summarized all waterproof, windproof and breathable fabrics that are suitable for rainwear. These fabrics are also referred to as "hardshells" or "3rd layer". Their function is achieved by a thin membrane or coating, which on one hand blocks rain and on the other can release moisture and heat to the outside of the fabric. This functional membrane or coating is laminated/applied to the outer fabric. The best values in terms of breathability and waterproofness achieve fabrics with a membrane, the so-called laminates. Depending on how many layers it is made of, it is a 2, 2.5 or 3-layer laminate. The number of layers affects the technical characteristics, the wearing comfort and the processing of the fabric. For example, a 3-layer laminate is very abrasion resistant and does not need an additional liner. In contrast is a 2.5-layer laminate perfect for ultralight purposes or for travelling.
