My first self-built tent and how it came to be:
Around the year 2000 I bought a Walrus Archrival IV as a trekking tent. Nothing great, but it wasn't very expensive, weighed a portable 2200g and as a tall person (1.85) I could sit upright in it as well as lie in it with a thick down sleeping bag without bumping into it.
Unfortunately, the material of the floor was not very durable and the rest was getting on in years. Tents that met my expectations in terms of weight/price/size were simply not to be found. I often thought that I would build the tent myself - if only I knew where to get the appropriate fabrics! That's when I discovered extremtextil in spring 2011. After a summer of sewing small things for test purposes, I first sewed an outer tent made of silnylon (which was manageable in terms of time and money) - it worked great and saved 400g in weight! So in 2013 I dared to work on the inner tent.
That wasn't quite so easy - but in the end I had a comparatively large tent that weighed 1700g, plus a small silnylon tarp for the entrance, together for around 150€.
It has a few quirks, because I took the cut off without dismantling the tent, because some things were unexpectedly difficult (keeping the curve of the front pole tunnel, for example) and because cutting large parts without staples is risky; so it won't last forever, but - then I'll just sew myself a new one :D.
