6. Press studs and reinforcement half way up porch zip
This shows the silnylon reinforcements at this stress
point. So far the plastic press studs show no signs of weakening or working lose but I am careful with them.
The tarp tent was pitched tightly in the garden and all
the seams were sealed using a mixture of silicone sealant and white spirit.
Seam sealing not only waterproofs the stitching but also
in my experience it strengthens the stitching and makes it more resistant to abrasion.
Finally, I would like to add that two years ago I had never
used a sewing machine or even thought that I would. After carelessly tearing some favourite trousers with a crampon I decided to repair them myself. Then I moved on to try some simple projects, modifying and repairing other gear and
gradually building-up my experience and confidence in different techniques.
All this saves money and extends the life of your gear. Being outdoors and enjoying nature is of course the main objective but there's also something about using your own handmade gear that is very satisfying!
